Markus Batchelor Declares his 2012 Candidacy for Student Association Senator Representing CCAS
Markus Batchelor, a member of the Class of 2015 and a political science major in the Columbian School of Arts and Sciences announced his candidacy today for Student Association Senator representing the Columbian School.
“I'm running for SA Senate because I know that the students at GW need more passionate, accessible, and active leadership in order to make the needs of the students first priority with the administration”, said Batchelor. “I want to be a student advocate, a student fighter and an effective and accessible student leader. My job as Senator will surround making sure that students have a voice in decision-making processes that effect them and that our Student Association is more effectively facilitating this conversation”.
Other sections of a more detailed platform on his website include supporting and enhancing Green initiatives around campus, enhancing the multicultural and diverse experience at GW, cutting student fees, and making campus transportation (The Vern Express, 4Ride, etc.) more efficient and convenient.
Batchelor’s campaign slogan, “Nothing About Us, Without Us”, “embodies what the attitude of the entire SA should be. My pledge to the students is that my first priority will be my constituency and making sure their voice is always heard in the decision-making processes that matter at this school”.
“We need fighters in our Student Association who not only seek to lead, but seek to empower other students to make the difference themselves”, said Batchelor
Markus Batchelor is a Stephen Joel Trachtenberg Scholar at GW, born and raised in Washington, D.C. in Congress Heights. Last month, he was the only freshman awarded the Martin Luther King Jr. Commendation, an award given by the University for leadership and service in the school community and the greater Washington community.
Markus is the National President of the DC Statehood Student Association and serves on the GW Public Service Grant Commission. Before coming to GW, he served as the 52nd Youth Mayor of the District of Columbia and was elected and currently serves as 1st Vice President of the Ward Eight Democrats.
